Boambilly House

Concept Description:

Surrounded by snow-covered mountains and dense forests, at the bottom of the valley, on the shore of Lake Tahoe, lies Boambilly House. This concept house is designed to be a writer's retreat where inspiration can be found all around.

The Boambilly house model began as a simple form, giving me freedom and allowing my creativity to soar. I was inspired by the streamline design of the original model, keeping to the use of beams and 90-degree angles; I developed a modern lake house built from squares and rectangles.

The colour palette is unique, completely opposite to the typical white and beige colours found in most homes.

The dark greys and blacks, use of stone and timber made it a difficult colour palette to work with, but I feel this design choice helped the house blend nicely into its environment on the lake.

It is a modern lake house, nothing like the typical timber lodge designs that can be found surrounding the lake. The ground floor is an open plan, opening right up to a formal living room with a stone fireplace. The second floor is a mezzanine level which accommodates double storey floor to ceiling glass windows in the dining area on the ground floor. These windows allow for plenty of natural light which is much needed to contrast with the interior's dark colour palette.

This house is perfect for entertaining guests with two living areas, a spacious kitchen with a walk-in glass wine fridge, and a large dining table in the heart of the home, perfect for sharing meals with family and friends whilst enjoying the beautiful view of the lake.

It's the perfect place to get away from the busy city lifestyle.

Boambilly House

Boambilly, the original name for what Sydneysiders know as Shark Island. The word comes from the Gadigal people and is believed ‘boambilly’ was their word for women.

This streamlined model enabled me to alter the form and develop it to create a modern that was still sleek & pleasing to the eye.

What makes this house so unique that truely inspired me is the colour palette. I find the dark colour palette and use of raw materials helps the house blend harmoniously into its environment. The homeowners wanted there to be a connection between the interior an exterior hence the large glass windows and grand skylights.

Sketch Development

My design was inspired by the De Stijl Movement, popular from 1917 - 1931. It is a very geometric design that incorporates a collage of boxes and rectangles.

Inspired by the Black Villa, designed by Reza Mohtashami, I wanted to create a connection between the interior and exterior environment and decided to do this by creating small atriums within the walls where trees and other plants can grow.

The stairs are a serving element for ascension and descension between the two floors of the home. The must create an enticing experience for residence as they leave the lower level to ascend to the private realm.

The home consists of a floating staircase make from treated oak with a steel cable balustrade that travels all the way up to the ceiling of the second floor.

Dining

The dining area is a served space for an intimate eating experience for personal interactions with multiple people. It is the key area for entertaining guests, but also in this setting, is a beautiful space to just sit and observe the natural world.

I was inspired by this dining table made from a tree trunk, and wanted to incorporate a similar one into my design as a main focal point for the dining space. Along with the floor to ceiling glass windows, this furniture piece helps connect the internal environment with the external environment.

Study

The writing experience should be an opened yet closed off space, positioned around a corner to create a sense of privacy. There should be enough light but not too much, as books should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Windows will provide a lookout into the view of the lake and forest, giving inspiration.
